Leading Complex Projects Sprint

The John Grill Institute for Project Leadership has partnered with Sydney Executive Plus, a strategic initiative of the Business School, to deliver the Leading Complex Projects sprint. The inaugural cohort wrapped up in June with resounding success, equipping 43 leaders across public and private sectors with practical tools for navigating large-scale, complex projects.
Led by Institute Director Professor Jennifer Whyte and Associate Professor of Practice Natalie Smith, the sprint was co-designed and delivered with Infrastructure NSW. The programme drew on real-world insights from major NSW projects including Sydney Metro, Sydney Modern, Westmead Hospital, and the Sydney Fish Markets redevelopment.
Over two weeks, participants explored the unique characteristics of complex projects, focusing on innovative leadership approaches, effective governance mechanisms, and systems thinking. The sprint covered project lifecycle management, adaptive governance, stakeholder influence, and outcome-focused delivery strategies.
Feedback highlighted the programme’s practical value and accessibility. One participant noted: “The content was informative, the delivery excellent and easy to follow. These sorts of courses would be really helpful to PM/Program Managers across sectors.” Another reflected: “I enjoyed the sprint a lot and needed it at this stage of my career.”
The diverse cohort represented organisations tackling Australia’s most significant infrastructure challenges. With strong industry partnerships and participant engagement, the sprint is w wonderful opportunity for executive project leadership education.
The next cohort kicks off in September 2025. Find out more here.
