Round Table: The Balance Between Configuration Management and Project Controls

March 16, 2022, 3:00 pm-5:00 pm AEDT

Questions considered during the Round Table discussions included:
  1. Project control functions and configuration management work on different time scales. From a project controls perspective, there is a need to establish a baseline for business case approvals, while configuration changes can occur throughout detailed planning and delivery. What are the tensions created by these different interests?
  2. There are likely to be more engineering changes as the design adapts to project demands and constraints, particularly in innovative or complex projects. Are there ways of scaling project controls to the demands of complex projects that account for anticipated change?
  3. How are participants bringing aspects of configuration management earlier into the business case and project definition process? What procurement constraints might be associated with bringing contractors into the business case process early?
  4. Project controls may find resistance to increasing administration associated with tracking changes and controls. How flexible can project controls be in tracking changes?
Delivered as part of the Better Infrastructure Initiative
